This event tested route choice and map reading.
Scoring was cunning this year, to test your THINKING ABILITY under pressure.- - There were wrong-answer and overtime penalties.
So there were fewer wrong answers this year - penalizing them made guesses a thing of the past - and allowing everyone 2 hrs made for very few overtimes.
New faces - including many local residents who were excited about using their streets.
Old faces - someone even remembered my Griffith Park Christmas event when I gave o-flag tree ornaments to finishers :-)
Well-known faces - thank you for coming out in support.
An intriguing area for Score-O, and it seemed a great social occasion. People had a chance to mingle both before and after.
It was not surprising to Scott and myself that our talented experienced orienteers found it a challenge too. How people did , which controls were most visited? Alex Kiperman did brilliantly and Brad Weyers also broke the 800 barrier.
#200 green zone Afterwards John and I drove up to this control - a magnificent view of downtown and Dodger Stadium.
Why dont you take the map and find some other spots you may have missed?
Lets talk about Meet Directing and VOLUNTEERS
This was my last time as MD for this club. Over the years I have loved every minute of MDing events. Working with the Course setter to be sure they have all they need, that the assembly area fits their course starts etc. Scott Schmitz and I even walked the hills to double check a few clues, and we simplified a few of them for you! Get to the control and prove it.
Finding volunteers is really a rewarding part of the MD work. Ask them personally - think about what that person might like to do - who they might enjoy being with on a drudge task.
I like to mix people up - get them to make new social contacts within a club. Get juniors to meet advanced Oers. etc etc. As there was no control retrieval at this event, I was determined to use some of the fast runners to assist on the more mundane jobs like registration. Give them a taste of what so many others do for them at every event. Gotcha!
Here are the special people for this Event, please join me and thank them:
Gary Dolgin and Jim Whitted were chiefs of the Fees and Welcome-form-filling stations. Gary missed his shade tree. Jim looks forward to Meet Directing - some time . Usually control pickers Brad Weyers helped Gary and Jeremy Swirsley helped Jim.
Nancy Pistole was very alert and intuitive and stepped in when things anywhere needed doing.
Cal-tech - Luigi Perotti, Madeline Miller and Tommy Ingulfsen
I thought it a great opportunity for CalTech O-club to step up to the table, so I asked them to handle the results. They worked so hard and said I should have chosen 5th graders who were better at addition :-) I asked Alex Kiperman to join them - he is at college for Computer Science - an opportunity for these young tech people to meet . I may consider 5th graders another time! Seriously, it was planned that they enter the answers on a spreadsheet but Scott's laptop failed . So it was count on your fingers time.
Joe Vliestra came a long way to bring his First Aid kit and knowledge - luckily he didnt even need to help with a blister - but he was there with Amanda in readiness.
John Kearney, manned the Finish timing, the refreshments, and kept an eye on everything and was such a help all week as I organized this and that.
