What is Orienteering?

Orienteering is an organised sport for individuals, hiking or running cross-country using a map to find your way through the trees and fields. It is done in the USA and all over the world, starting in Scandinavia where thousands go out each week-end. So wherever you travel you will find an event and new friends    ---- and --- >>>>

EVERYONE IS WELCOME

You are given a very detailed map with some 'check-points' marked on it. The plan is to get from point-to-point by exercising your map-reading skills. As all this takes place in the nice outdoors, woods and mountains, you get physical exercise too    ---- and --- >>>>

EVERYONE IS WELCOME

As with all sports, there are categories for casual hikers through elite athletes. You can walk or run, just dont lose yourself! Take a friend or family. And unlike many sports, at EVERY EVENT there are special courses for you to begin to test your skills and plenty of help from club members. So click around this site for links and visit your local club, and come and join us!    ---- and --- >>>>

EVERYONE IS WELCOME

All courses are planned to take about an hour. A beginner's course may only cover 3km, but will introduce you to lots of new navigational skills (map-reading, pacing, compass, contouring). The fastest runners cover about 9km, and sometimes they are so fast they lose their way more than the slower folks. see Aesop Fables.    ---- and --- >>>>

Look what Orienteering can do for YOU:

  • You will have FUN and at the same time:-
  • You will develop your decision making skills.
  • You will learn to solve complex problems.
  • You will become more observant
Orienteering is a road to personal-awareness and self-reliance... You can push yourself to extremes and learn the harsh reality of your physical and mental limitations or coast quietly down a solitary path watching the earth spin beneath your feet, but when you are through, exhilarated and exhausted, at least for a moment, "all seems right with the world".
